Since the first Coronavirus outbreak in Australia in January, the Australian medical system has been facing one of its biggest challenges in a century. A shortage of surgical masks and PPE not only threatens doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals at the front lines of the pandemic, but also puts every Australian at serious risk, since we are relying on these same health care workers to save us if we get sick.

For these reasons, the Hong Kong Masks Australia volunteer team was formed by a group of strong, caring, modern women. Working on their sewing team, they have been taken back in time to when working on factory production lines was part of their culture. They are experiencing what life was like on a production line in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Our volunteers might not be able to fight the battle on the frontline with the health care workers, but they can support their community by supplying homemade masks to those in need.

One tiny step can make a massive difference. Taking the first step is always the hardest, but it’s the one that truly matters. Are you ready to get your first sewing machine?
